The Thursday Lemon
Every Thursday at four, Mrs. Pettibone bought one lemon, paid in exact change, and asked Dev whether the shop was haunted yet. This Thursday she bought two lemons, paid with a fifty, and asked nothing at all.
Dev counted the change into her glove twice. She didn't notice the second time, and Mrs. Pettibone noticed everything.
He locked up at six, turned the sign, and set the second lemon on the counter where she always stood. Next Thursday, he decided, he would tell her the shop was haunted after all. It seemed only fair to give her something to look forward to.

Your idea in. A whole story out, ending included.
A night-shift nurse realizes the new patient in bed four knows her childhood nickname. She's Ruth, 41. Only her late brother ever called her Bee.
Bed Four Literary suspense · about 1,900 words · 9-minute read At 3 a.m. the ward belonged to the machines and to Ruth, and she liked it that way. The man in bed four had come up from the ER without a name, a wallet, or a single bruise to explain why he couldn't remember either. "Night, Bee," he said when she checked his line. Nobody had called her Bee since 1991. … She signed the discharge form with the hospital pen and left the space for his name empty. On the way out she bought two coffees from the machine, the way her brother used to, and drank neither.
The ending was chosen before the first line was written.
Why it works
Can AI write a complete short story for me?
River's AI story generator turns your idea, your notes or one tapped genre into a complete short story with a title, a beginning, a middle and an ending. It saves the story as a doc you can edit, extend or keep writing. Most stories run 1,500 to 2,500 words, about a ten-minute read, and bedtime stories are shorter and gentler. Give it a sentence, or paste characters and notes, and River uses every detail exactly. Tap a genre alone, and it invents an original premise.
Plenty of story generators stop before the story does. Some write one paragraph per click, and some show only a short preview. River plans the ending first, before it writes a word, then writes every scene toward it. The last beat lands on an image, a spoken line or a new piece of information, never a closing paragraph explaining the moral. Before it finishes, River rereads the story for slips in names, ages and objects, the small errors that break a reader's trust.
Want a twist ending? Add it to the box, such as "Twist: the letters were from her mother," and River builds the story backward from it, planting clues from the first scene. Asking for flash fiction or a set length works the same way. With no idea yet, the plot generator gives you five complete plots to choose from. Already writing? Continue my story picks up where you stopped. And when one story wants to become a book, try the AI novel writer.

What makes a generated story worth reading
A story feels finished when four things are on the page: someone who wants something, something in the way, a turn that changes the plan, and an ending that answers the question the opening asked. River decides all four before drafting, so the middle has somewhere to go. It holds one point of view throughout and gives each character their own voice. That is why a two-thousand-word story from a short idea can still read like a story someone meant to write. To build one yourself, see how to write a short story.
Each genre carries a promise to its readers, and River keeps it. Romance ends hopeful, cozy keeps the violence offstage, mystery names who did it and why, and horror is allowed to end dark. Bedtime stories stay gentle, with nothing scarier than mild suspense. For tropes, heat level and the leads you already have in mind, try the romance story generator. For a world with its own magic rule, the fantasy story generator writes a chapter that keeps the rule.
Treat the first version as a draft to push against. Read it aloud and mark the line where your attention drifted; that scene usually needs a sharper want or a cut. Swap in a detail only you would know, such as a street, a smell or a family joke. Then ask for a different ending and keep whichever one surprises you. Every change also strengthens your claim to the story: the U.S. Copyright Office's 2025 report protects the expressive choices a person makes, not prompts alone.
Questions authors ask
Common questions
What is an AI story generator?
It's a tool that writes fiction from a short idea, your notes or just a genre. River's version writes one complete short story with a title and a real ending. It chooses the ending before the opening, so every scene moves toward it, and the last beat is an action, an image or a line of dialogue, not a moral. Don't like the ending? Ask for another.
Is River's AI story generator free?
Yes, you can start free, and the Free plan needs no card. It includes a monthly AI allowance; when that runs out, writing pauses until it refreshes or you upgrade, with paid plans from $14 a month. Every story is saved as a doc in your River workspace, so it's still there when you close the tab or come back next week.
How do I get an AI to write a story for me?
Tap a genre or type your idea, from one sentence to a page of notes, then press Write my story. You sign up in a popup, and River writes the whole story into a doc, from the title to the final line. Want changes? Ask in plain words, such as "make the ending sadder" or "give the sister more to say."
Can it write a short story with a twist ending?
Yes. Type your idea and the twist, for example "Twist: the ship can hear her", and River plans the reveal before it writes a word. Clues read naturally the first time and differently on a second read, the reveal waits for the final scene, and nothing explains it afterwards. Want a twist but haven't picked one? Write "twist ending" and River chooses.
How long are the stories?
Most run 1,500 to 2,500 words, around ten minutes of reading. A bedtime story is shorter, about 600 to 900 words, and a 32-page picture book belongs in the picture book manuscript writer. For flash fiction or a set length, put it in the box, such as "under 500 words", and River writes to it. The word count and reading time sit under the title.
Can I turn the story into a book?
Yes. The story lives in a doc in your River workspace, so you can ask River to expand it into chapter one, write what happens next, or outline a whole novel. Notes and later chapters can sit in the same space, and River reads them before it writes, which keeps names and facts straight as the book grows.
Can I publish an AI-written story on Amazon?
You can, but Amazon asks you to be open about it. KDP's content guidelines say AI-generated text must be disclosed, even if you edited it heavily, while using AI only to brainstorm or to edit your own writing needs no disclosure. You tell Amazon when you publish. Amazon said in 2023 that it wasn't showing this to shoppers "at this time."
