Before and after
Your idea in. A novel with a plan out.
A lighthouse keeper's daughter finds letters from a drowned sailor her family swears never existed. Cornwall, 1950s. Nell, 24, tells it. The sailor is Ruan. Her father keeps the light, and the secret. Cast: Aunt Kerensa, who burned the other letters; Tom Pascoe, the harbourmaster's son, who wants Nell gone. Must happen: a page is torn from the wreck register; Nell's mother left the island the winter Ruan drowned. Ending: on the cliff where Ruan's boat went down.
The Keeper's Daughter. Adult gothic mystery, first person, past tense, about 85,000 words. Chapter plan (first 3 of 24). 1. The Tin Box. Nell finds the letters. Changes: she stops trusting her father's story. 2. Nobody Named Ruan. The village denies he lived. Changes: someone lies to her face. 3. The Wreck Register. One page is missing. Changes: the lie has an author. Chapter 1: The Tin Box. The lamp room still smelled of paraffin and my father's tobacco, though he hadn't climbed those stairs in three years.
Every chapter has a job, so no two chapters do the same work.
Why it works
Can AI help you write a novel?
An AI novel writer helps you plan and draft a novel, and the useful ones work the way novelists do: plan first, then one chapter at a time. Tell River about your story here, from a single sentence to pages of notes, and it writes a chapter-by-chapter plan where every chapter has a job, plus a full first chapter of 2,500 to 4,000 words. When you're ready, it writes the next chapter from the plan. Genre, audience, point of view and tense all come from what you give it.
The plan is built to be written from. Each chapter gets a title, what happens and what changes. Together they show the arc at a glance: an early inciting incident, a midpoint turn, a crisis, a climax and an ending that answers your opening question. The default is 24 chapters for about 85,000 words, which sits inside the 80,000 to 89,999 words Writer's Digest suggests for adult fiction. Fantasy and young adult plans adjust to their usual lengths.
River drafts; you steer. Chapter one is a full draft to revise, not a preview, and the book grows one chapter at a time, so you can change course whenever the story surprises you. Rewrite anything that doesn't sound like you, and keep what does. Writing nonfiction, or not sure what kind of book it is yet? The AI book writer handles both. Prefer to fill in a plan yourself? Start from the 24-chapter novel outline.
What lands in your doc
What lands in your novel doc
- A book brief with working title, genre, audience, point of view and target length
- A main cast of three to six characters, each with one line on what they want
- A 24-chapter plan by default, grouped into acts, with what happens and what changes
- A real arc: inciting incident, midpoint turn, crisis, climax and an ending that answers the opening
- A full chapter one of 2,500 to 4,000 words that ends on a hook
- Each later chapter in its own doc, linked from its line in the plan
- Chapters that hold only story text, with no notes or leftover instructions inside

How to write a novel with AI and keep it yours
Write in order, and keep the plan current. Before each new chapter, River reads the brief, the plan and the previous chapter, then writes the new one into its own doc in the same workspace. That keeps names, wants and plot threads steady. It isn't perfect across a whole book, so skim each chapter against the plan and fix drift early. To keep the cast, places and rules on file as the book grows, build a story bible from your chapters.
A short brief can't capture your voice, so treat chapter one as a starting draft. The Authors Guild advises that if you claim authorship, you shouldn't let AI replace your unique voice, thinking and creativity. In practice, that means rewriting scenes in your own words, adding the details only you know and cutting whatever feels generic. If you've already written pages of your own, paste them into River and ask it to follow your style in later chapters.
If you plan to self-publish, Amazon KDP's content guidelines ask you to disclose text an AI tool generated, even after you edit it. Keep notes on which parts you wrote and which River drafted, so that answer is easy. Working with an agent or publisher? The Authors Guild advises telling them up front how you used AI. When the manuscript is finished, Publish a Book on Amazon drafts your description, keywords and categories in one pack.
Questions authors ask
Common questions
What is an AI novel writer?
An AI novel writer is a tool that plans and drafts fiction with you. This one turns your idea, from one sentence to a full outline, into a brief, a cast list and a chapter plan. Every chapter in the plan has a job, and chapter one comes written in full. Each later chapter comes when you ask, written from the plan and the chapter before it.
Can AI write an entire novel?
It can draft one a chapter at a time, but a novel worth reading still needs you. River writes the plan and chapter one, then each next chapter when you ask, rereading the plan and the last chapter first. You read, change the plan when the story surprises you, and revise. That steering is what keeps the book yours.
Is it legal to write a novel with AI?
Yes. No US law forbids it. The US Copyright Office says AI output is protected only where a human author has determined enough of its expressive elements, and that prompts alone don't qualify. So the more of the final book you write, rewrite and arrange yourself, the stronger your claim. River's terms assign its output to you.
Can readers tell if a book was written by AI?
Often they can when nobody revised it. 404 Media found leftover AI instructions printed inside published novels, and stock phrases are another common giveaway. River keeps notes out of your chapters and avoids stock lines, but the real answer is revision: read every chapter, rewrite what isn't yours, and disclose AI use where it's required.
What if my novel needs more or fewer chapters?
Just say so. The plan defaults to 24 chapters for adult fiction, and River uses 20 to 30 when the genre calls for it, with longer plans for fantasy and science fiction and shorter ones for young adult. After chapter one, tap Change the plan and say how many chapters you want, or which to merge, split or cut.
What if I've already started my novel?
Then start from your own pages. Paste where you stopped into Continue My Story, and it writes on in your voice, from a few paragraphs to a full scene or chapter. Want to know how your opening lands first? The AI beta reader shows where a reader leaned in and where they'd stop.
