Why it works

What should a plot generator give you?

River's plot generator gives you five complete story plots for the genre you tap, each with a one-line hook, a turning point and an ending. It also works as a story idea generator: every idea arrives as a full plot, ending included. One tap is enough. Add things to include, from a lighthouse or two sisters to notes on your own characters, and River works them in. Like one? Ask River to write it as a full story, or outline it as a novel.

Many random plot generators hand you loose fragments, a trait, a setting and a theme, and leave the connecting to you. Each of River's five plots names who wants what, what stands in the way, the turn that changes the plan and how it ends. To choose, read all five, close the doc, and pick the plot you're still thinking about the next morning. Want a smaller spark instead? Reedsy's free writing generators give quick plot, title and name prompts.

The five are built to differ. Expect different heroes, settings, tropes and kinds of ending, with at least one bittersweet or open ending outside romance and cozy. Each plot stays under about 120 words, so all five read easily on a phone. When one grabs you, the AI story generator can turn a premise into a finished story, and the book outline generator can stretch it into a chapter list. The character generator can give your hero a full backstory.

What makes a plot worth writing

A premise is a situation; a plot is a situation that changes. The smallest working plot has someone who wants something, a force that blocks them, a turn that forces a new plan, and an ending that settles the question. River gives every plot all four, plus a tag line of trope words and a note on whether it suits a short story, a novella or a novel. Change any piece freely. The plot is a starting point, not a contract.

Genre is a promise to readers, and these plots honor it. Romance plots end hopeful, with a happily ever after or at least a happy-for-now. Mystery plots name the culprit and the motive. Thrillers keep a clock running, horror is allowed to end dark, and a cozy detail in your notes keeps things gentle. If your included details pull against the genre, River honors your details and labels the blend in the tag line, so a gothic romance knows exactly what it is.

Can you use the plot? Yes. The U.S. Copyright Office's FAQ on what copyright protects says copyright doesn't cover ideas, concepts or methods, only the way they are expressed. Amazon's KDP guidelines also treat using AI to brainstorm, while you write the text yourself, as AI-assisted, with no disclosure needed. So a plot from this page is a seed. The book that grows from it, written in your own words, is yours to publish.

Questions authors ask

Common questions

What is a plot generator?

A plot generator hands you story ideas that already have a shape. River's version needs one tap: pick a genre and five complete, different plots land in a doc, each with a hook, a turning point and an ending. You can rewrite any of them, ask for five more, or have River write one as a story.

Are the plots random?

They're new every time rather than pulled from a list or a fill-in-the-blanks template, so tapping the same genre twice gives you fresh plots. Tap Surprise me for five plots across five genres. To steer the randomness, add details such as "a lighthouse, two sisters", or describe your characters, and River weaves them in.

What if none of the five grab me?

Ask River for five more, or say what you liked, such as "more like plot 2 but darker", and it builds the next batch around that. You can also tap a different genre on this page, or add a detail that matters to you so the plots start closer to home.

Can River write the plot as a story?

Yes. When your five plots land, tap Write one as a story and tell River which number you like. It writes that plot as a complete story, with an ending, in a new doc beside your plots. Ask to "Outline plot 3 as a novel" for a chapter list instead. To structure it yourself first, the Save the Cat beat sheet lays out 15 beats to fill.

Is the plot generator free?

You can start free, with no card. The Free plan includes a monthly AI allowance, and five plots is a small request. If the allowance runs out, it pauses until it refreshes or you upgrade, and River's paid plans start at $14 a month. Your plots stay saved in your River workspace.

Which genre should I tap if I'm not sure?

Tap the genre you love reading, since you already know what its readers expect and what bores them. Or tap Surprise me and notice which of the five genres pulls at you. Already have a story that needs a jolt? The plot twist generator works from a setup you paste.
