Outcome to Assessment Alignment Matrix
Alignment, computed in both directions
One row per stated outcome, then one row per graded item, then the checks that reconcile them.

The grade weight columns are the two a blank alignment grid has no room for, and they are the two that turn a gap into arithmetic.
A course alignment map, an alignment blueprint, a course design template: they are all the same blank grid, with outcomes down one side, assessments across the top, and the instructor filling in the cells. A grid you fill in yourself agrees with you. This pack computes the join instead, in both directions, and carries the grade weight into it, so a finding becomes arithmetic rather than an opinion. The inherited course audit reads that same join backward, out of materials somebody else already built.
Take COMM 250 at Callowhill State University: six stated outcomes, seven graded items, weights summing to a clean 100. Computed forward, one outcome had nothing measuring it, the one asking students to apply the review board's own criteria, taught for three sessions in week six and never scored. Computed backward, participation held ten points against nothing the syllabus stated. Those are the same ten points from either end of the join, which is why the fix closes: retire participation, and the memo that scores that outcome is funded.
A reviewer's second question is whether the credit award is supported, so the Workload Estimate prices every week against the federal credit hour, defined as one hour of instruction plus a minimum of two hours of out-of-class work a week. COMM 250 comes to 122 out-of-class hours against a 90-hour floor, with weeks one and two beneath it and three weeks at twice it. Accreditors read the course level too: NECHE requires assessment built on verifiable statements of what a student gains.
What's in the pack
Outcome to Assessment Alignment Matrix
One row per stated outcome with the items measuring it, then one row per item with the outcomes it claims.
Workload Estimate
Out-of-class hours by week against the credit-hour floor, so an overloaded week is a number rather than a feeling.
Module and Week Schedule
Fifteen weeks against the real academic calendar, each carrying its topic, its outcomes, its readings and what is due.
How the Alignment Matrix Is Built
The join written out in both directions, with the four checks that decide whether the matrix is telling you anything.
Outcome Statements
Each outcome phrased around an observable action, mapped to the programme outcome it serves and the level it sits at.
Assessment Plan
Every graded item with its weight, the outcomes it measures and its due week, so a reallocation is visible rather than quiet.
Module Plans
Five modules, each naming the outcomes it serves, the in-class work, the out-of-class hours and the graded items it feeds.
Syllabus
A grade table with an outcomes column, which is the column students read and the one most syllabi leave out.
How to use it
- 1
Open it in River, or download it
Open the pack in River and let the agent compute the matrix, or download the eight blank Word and CSV files with no account.
- 2
Send the outcomes and the weights
Paste the outcomes your programme states, plus the graded items with the percentage each one carries. The weights are what turn a gap into arithmetic.
- 3
Read the two findings
The matrix names the outcome nothing measures and the grade weight measuring nothing stated. They are usually the same points seen from opposite ends.
- 4
Reallocate, then price the week
Move the weight, then check the term against the credit-hour floor. A fix that lands three written items in one week has moved the problem, not solved it. Once the weights hold, the syllabus pack turns the design into a syllabus and resolves its dates against the registrar.
Frequently asked questions
Is this template free?
Yes. Download all eight files as Word documents and CSV sheets with no signup and no card. Edit with AI is the optional path, where the agent computes the matrix from your own outcomes and weights. The rest of the packs sit in the template library.
What format are the downloaded files?
Word documents (.docx) for the syllabus, outcome statements, assessment plan, module plans and the matrix explainer, and CSV (.csv) for the three sheets, zipped together. They open in Word, Pages, Google Docs, Excel, Numbers and Sheets with nothing to convert. In River the same content opens as live Docs and Sheets.
How is this different from a course alignment map?
An alignment map is a blank grid with a tick in each cell. This one carries the grade weight, so a tick is worth 5 points or 20, and it computes the reverse direction the grid has no column for: the graded item measuring nothing you stated.
Does it write the learning outcomes for me?
It drafts them from your programme's own framework descriptors and the content you send, and you approve the wording. The learning outcomes pack goes further, capping each statement at the level its evidence reaches. It will not invent an outcome to fill a hole in the matrix, because an outcome nobody teaches is worse than a gap you can see.
What does 'Edit with AI' actually do?
It creates a free River account and installs this exact pack as a private workspace. The agent opens ready to read whatever you send, whether that is a programme handbook, an old syllabus or a list of assignments with percentages, and to compute the matrix from it.
Can I use it on a course somebody else built?
You can, though the inherited course audit is built for exactly that. This pack assumes you own the course and can move a weight. That tool reads alignment out of the slide decks already in the folder. For a course you own but that has drifted, course modernization review crosses the evaluations against the assessment data.
Does this work for corporate training rather than a credit course?
The matrix half does, since competencies cross against assessments the same way. The workload half is keyed to the credit hour, which a corporate programme has no equivalent for. To build modules out of a recorded expert interview, the SME interview conversion starts from the recording itself.
Find the outcome nothing on your syllabus measures
Download the blank pack as Word and CSV files, or open it in River and have the matrix computed from your own outcomes and grade weights.
