What you'll get

Client files turned into a sourced brief, compared with NotebookLM

  • Facts and figures from the files, each with its file and page
  • Every place two files disagree, quoted side by side
  • Gaps the files leave open, turned into questions for the client

Before and after

Client files in. A brief the partner can check.

What you drop in (example)

Marlow Vets' board pack (PDF), a finance workbook (Excel), the current price list (Word), a staff survey summary (PowerPoint), and your notes from the first call with the CEO.

Your client brief (example excerpt)

Key facts. Revenue: $21.4m in FY25 (finance workbook, P&L tab). Clinics: 14 small-animal practices in Ohio (board pack, p. 2). Where the files disagree. Clinic count: 14 in the board pack (p. 2) and 12 on the price list (p. 1). Has the price list caught up with the two newest clinics? Unconfirmed. The Dayton clinic is being sold this year. This is in your call notes only; the board pack doesn't mention it. Questions for the client. 1. Is the Dayton sale agreed, or still a proposal? 2. Which clinic count should the project use?

Every fact keeps its file and page, so anyone on the team can check a line against the source.

Why it works

What's the best NotebookLM alternative for client work?

A NotebookLM alternative for consultants should do more than answer questions about a client's files: it should turn them into something you can hand over. NotebookLM answers questions about your sources, and River writes the deliverable from them. Drop the client's reports, decks and spreadsheets, plus your call notes. River writes a client brief in a doc: each fact with its file and page, contradictions between files, gaps the files leave open, and the questions to ask the client.

For many jobs NotebookLM is still the better research notebook, and it costs nothing to start. Google renamed it Gemini Notebook in July 2026. Google's overview of Gemini Notebook describes answers grounded in your sources with inline citations, plus Audio Overviews, mind maps, study guides and briefings. It reads Google Docs, Slides and Sheets directly. If you want to question a stack of reading, or listen to it on the way to a client, it is hard to beat.

River is built for the step after reading. The brief checks file against file, so a figure that differs between the board pack and the finance workbook surfaces before the first client meeting. Gaps become questions for the client rather than guesses. River works in one space per project, where follow-up requests use the same files: a SWOT analysis, an interview synthesis or a consulting proposal. Weighing ChatGPT as well? What lands in your doc

What's in your client brief

  • A short summary of each file you dropped, with page, slide or tab references
  • A key facts table where every figure keeps its unit, period, file and page
  • Contradictions between files quoted side by side, with what would settle each one
  • What the files don't cover, such as missing years, teams or figures a consultant needs
  • Questions for the client, most important first, each tied to the gap or conflict behind it
  • Pasted notes and saved NotebookLM answers marked unconfirmed until a client file backs them up

How it works

From client files to a brief you can check

  1. Drop the files

Drop up to ten client files, or paste your call notes and any answers saved from NotebookLM.

  2. River compares them

It reads each file in full, logs every figure with its page, and checks the files against each other.

  3. Read the brief

Sourced facts, contradictions, gaps and client questions land in one doc in your project space.

  4. Build the deliverable

Ask for the next piece, such as an interview guide or a proposal, from the same files.

NotebookLM vs River: limits, privacy and price

Start with limits. Google's Gemini Notebook plans page gives the free plan 100 notebooks of up to 50 sources each. Plus raises that to 100 sources, Pro to 300, and Ultra to 500 or 600. Its list of supported sources covers PDF, Word, PowerPoint, CSV, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, web pages, YouTube videos and audio. Excel workbooks aren't on that list, so convert them first. River takes up to ten files per drop here, Excel included.

Data rules matter with client material. Google's privacy page for Gemini Notebook says content in personal accounts won't be used to directly train its foundational models unless you give feedback. A thumbs up or down sends the related content to trained reviewers, and Google keeps reviewed feedback for up to three years, disconnected from your account. Work and school accounts are never reviewed or used for training. Under River's privacy policy, uploads are never used to train AI models.

So choose by the job. Pick NotebookLM for free research notebooks, Audio Overviews, study aids, and sources that already live in Google Drive. Since the rename it also opens inside the Gemini app. Pick River when the client's files have to become a deliverable the client will read, with a source beside every fact and the conflicts flagged. River's plans and pricing start with a free plan that needs no credit card, and paid plans cost from $14 a month.

Questions consultants ask

Common questions

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM is Google's research notebook: you add sources such as PDFs, Google Docs, web pages or YouTube videos, then ask questions and get answers with inline citations. Google renamed it Gemini Notebook in July 2026. It also turns sources into Audio Overviews, mind maps, study guides and briefings, and its standard plan is free with a Google account.

Is NotebookLM good for consultants?

Yes, for research and getting up to speed. It loads a client's documents quickly, and its cited answers make each claim easy to check. It is strongest when you know what to ask. River's brief checks every file against the others without being asked, lists the conflicts and gaps, and lays them out in the format a partner expects.

Is there a free NotebookLM alternative?

Yes. River has a free plan with some AI use and no credit card, so you can run this page on a real client's files today. NotebookLM's own standard plan is free too. Its paid tiers come with Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscriptions and raise the limit from 50 sources per notebook to between 100 and 600.

Is NotebookLM safe for client documents?

It depends on the account. Google's privacy page says work and school accounts are never reviewed or used for training. Personal accounts aren't used to directly train its foundational models unless you give feedback, which trained reviewers may read. River never uses uploads for training. Either way, check what your client agreement allows before you upload.

How many sources can a NotebookLM notebook hold?

Google's supported sources page allows up to 50 sources per notebook on the free plan, each up to 500,000 words or 200MB. Paid plans raise that to 100, 300, 500 or 600 sources. On this page, River takes up to ten files per drop, in Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV or text.

Can I bring my NotebookLM work into River?

Yes. Drop the original client files you added to your notebook, up to ten at a time, and paste any NotebookLM answers or notes you want to keep. River treats pasted answers as notes. A fact only counts as confirmed when a client file shows it, so nothing unchecked slips into the key facts table.

When is NotebookLM the better choice?

When you want to listen to your sources as an Audio Overview, study them with flashcards or quizzes, or keep notebooks inside the Gemini app. It also pulls in Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, web pages and YouTube videos, and it starts free. Choose River when the files have to become a client deliverable with a source beside every fact.

Turn the client's files into a brief

Drop the files and your notes. River sets them side by side, flags where they disagree, and lists what to ask the client.
