What you'll get

Your client files turned into a sourced brief, compared with ChatGPT

  • What each file says, with the file named beside it
  • Key facts and figures, each traced to where it came from
  • Contradictions between files, and open questions for the client

Before and after

Client files in. One brief you can check.

What you drop in (example)

Kestrel Dairies' 2025 annual report (PDF), a board strategy deck (PowerPoint), a sales by region sheet (Excel), and your typed notes from the kickoff call with the CFO.

Your client brief (example excerpt)

What each file says Annual report 2025: revenue $84m, up 6%, with growth credited to coffee-shop customers (p. 3). Board strategy deck: a plan to exit two supermarket contracts by 2027 (slide 9). Key facts and figures Foodservice share of sales: 41% (Sales by region, tab FY25). Contradictions Foodservice share: 41% in the sales sheet, "about a third" in the annual report (p. 5). Which is current? Open questions for the client 1. Are both supermarket exits approved, or still proposals? (Board deck, slide 9)

Every fact names its file and page, so a wrong number is easy to trace.

Why it works

Is ChatGPT good for consultants?

Yes, ChatGPT is useful for consultants, especially for drafting, research and quick analysis. Client material needs more care: a stack of reports, decks and notes that has to become facts you can defend in front of the client. This page does that job. Drop the client's files and your notes, or paste a ChatGPT chat. River writes a client brief in a doc: what each file says, the key figures with their source, contradictions between files, and open questions for the client.

Sources matter most on exactly this kind of work. A Harvard Business School study tested 758 BCG consultants. On tasks within AI's reach, those using it did 12% more work, 25% faster and at 40% higher quality. On a task built from spreadsheets and interview notes, they were 19 percentage points less likely to get it right. So every fact in your brief names its file, and gaps become questions, never guesses.

ChatGPT now covers much of the same ground, and both tools have a free plan. Its Projects keep a client's files, instructions and chats together, and ChatGPT Work can turn sources into finished documents, decks and spreadsheets. River also works in one space per project, where follow-up requests use everything already there. The differences are uploads that are never used to train AI, and ready-made consultant tools such as the SWOT analysis generator and interview synthesis that run from one drop.

What lands in your doc

What's in your client brief

  • What each file says in a few lines, with the file name and page beside it
  • Key facts and figures in one table, each with the file and page it came from
  • Contradictions between files quoted side by side, so you can ask the client which is right
  • Open questions for the client, built from the gaps and conflicts in what you dropped
  • Each claim in a pasted ChatGPT chat checked against your files: confirmed, contradicted or not in the files
  • Everything kept in one project space, so the next deliverable starts from the same files

How it works

From client files to a sourced brief

  1. Drop the files

Drop up to ten reports, decks, sheets or notes, or paste a ChatGPT chat about the client.

  2. River reads everything

It reads every file in full before writing, noting each figure and the page it sits on.

  3. Get your brief

File summaries, sourced facts, contradictions and open questions land in one doc in your project space.

  4. Keep building

Ask for the next deliverable, such as a SWOT or a client email, from the same files.

ChatGPT vs River for client work

ChatGPT is the broader tool. OpenAI's Projects help page lists image generation, voice conversations and web search inside projects, and you can add Google Drive and Slack links as project sources. Its ChatGPT Work guide shows Work turning notes and files into briefs, decks and spreadsheets, with plugins for apps such as SharePoint and Gmail. If you want one assistant for nearly everything, from a quick email to a client deck, ChatGPT is a strong choice.

Limits and data rules differ by plan. The same Projects page allows 5 files per project on Free, 25 on Go or Plus, and 40 on Pro and Business. Shared projects use project-only memory, so they can't draw on a member's memories from outside the project. OpenAI's page on how your data is used says content from personal plans may be used to train its models unless you turn that off. Business, Enterprise and Edu data isn't used by default. Under River's privacy policy, nothing you upload is used to train AI.

So choose by the job. In October 2026, OpenAI's pricing page listed ChatGPT Go at $8, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 a month, with Business at $20 a user a month billed yearly, or $25 monthly. River's plans start free with no credit card, then cost from $14 a month. Pick ChatGPT for breadth, voice, images and apps such as Google Drive and Slack. Pick River when you want a brief that names the file behind every fact from one drop, and uploads that are never used for training.

Questions consultants ask

Common questions

Is ChatGPT good for consultants?

Yes, for many jobs. It drafts quickly, searches the web, handles voice and images, and its Projects keep a client's files and chats together. Take more care with client material and check every figure against its file. In a Harvard Business School study, consultants using AI did worse on a task built from spreadsheets and interview notes.

Is it safe to put client documents in ChatGPT?

It depends on your plan and your client contract. OpenAI says content on its personal plans may be used for training unless you opt out, while Business, Enterprise and Edu data isn't used by default. River never uses your uploads to train AI. Whichever tool you choose, check what your client agreement allows before you upload.

How many files can a ChatGPT project hold?

OpenAI's Projects help page lists up to 5 files per project on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro. Business, Enterprise and Edu projects also hold up to 40. On this page, River takes up to 10 files per drop as Word, PDF, text, CSV, Excel or PowerPoint, and keeps them in your project space.

What is a client brief?

A client brief is a short summary of a client's own material, with a source for every fact, read before the first meeting. River's opens with a summary and what each file says. Then come the key facts, contradictions side by side, a check of any pasted chat against the files, and open questions. Missing facts become questions, never guesses.

Can I bring my ChatGPT chats into River?

Yes. Copy a ChatGPT chat about the client and paste it into the box, alone or with your files. River treats the chat as notes and checks each claim in it against your files. The brief marks every claim as confirmed, contradicted or not in the files, so you know what still needs confirming.

How much does ChatGPT cost compared with River?

When we checked in October 2026, OpenAI's pricing listed ChatGPT Free, Go at $8, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100 a month. Business cost $20 a user a month billed yearly for two or more users, or $25 monthly. River has a free plan with no credit card, and paid plans from $14 a month.

When is ChatGPT the better choice?

When you want one assistant for nearly everything: voice conversations, image generation, web research, and finished decks and spreadsheets through ChatGPT Work. It also connects to apps such as Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint. River fits better when you want a sourced brief from one drop, with every fact showing its file, and uploads that are never used for training. Also compare River and NotebookLM.
