About this document

A supplemental insurance claim letter asks an insurer that accepted a property, auto or business claim to pay more, because its estimate missed or underpriced covered work. The letter sets the insurer's estimate against your contractor's estimate and invoices line by line, reports damage found during repairs, and asks for a specific amount by a set date.

Use the supplemental insurance claim letter when coverage is settled but the amount is not. For a denied claim, send an insurance claim appeal letter instead. Some states set a deadline for supplemental claims counted from the date of loss. Florida, for example, bars a supplemental property claim not noticed within 18 months of the date of loss (Fla. Stat. 627.70132).

How to fill it in

  1. Line up both estimates. In the Line-by-Line Payment Comparison, put each insurer estimate line next to the contractor's line for the same work, including overhead and profit, sales tax and code upgrades.
  2. Explain each difference. For every gap, say whether the item was left out, measured short or priced below local cost, and name the exhibit that proves it, such as a code requirement, quote or invoice.
  3. Add damage found during repairs. Describe hidden damage found after the inspection, photograph it before it is covered up, and give the adjuster a date to reinspect before the work is closed in.
  4. Claim withheld depreciation. If the policy pays replacement cost, read what it requires before it pays withheld depreciation, such as finishing repairs within a set time, and attach the final invoices.
  5. Check deadlines and send. Set a response date that fits your state's claim handling rules and any supplemental claim deadline. Send by certified mail and keep proof. Read the policy's appraisal condition before disputing the amount further.

Notes for you, delete before sending:

  • Many policies have an "Appraisal" condition for disagreements about the amount of loss. Usually each side picks an appraiser and the two pick an umpire. Read your policy's own wording for who pays, the time limits, and what the result decides. This template does not recommend using it or not.

  • If the insurer does not pay or answer, other options include a complaint to your state insurance department, a licensed public adjuster, or a lawyer. Each has different costs and limits. This template does not recommend one.
