Before and after
Your notes in. Yale-sized answers out.
Interested in linguistics, cognitive science, maybe computer science. Saturdays at my nani's tailoring shop in Edison, NJ for 3 years: hemming, measuring, translating Gujarati for customers. Can measure for a sherwani in under 4 minutes. I keep a notebook of mixed Gujarati-English sentences I hear at the shop: 214 so far. Cousin Anika (6) said "Didi, the cat is very gussa today" (gussa = angry, but angrier). Debate captain, lost the state final in March. I fill every pause when I talk. Nani just waits until customers say what they really want.
What is one aspect of yourself that you hope to grow or develop during college? (168 characters) Patience with silence. I fill every pause when I talk. At the shop, Nani waits quietly until a customer says what they really want. I'd like to learn to wait like that. Tell us about a topic or idea that excites you (opening) My cousin Anika is six, and she once told me, "Didi, the cat is very gussa today." She didn't run out of English. She picked the Gujarati word because gussa is angrier than angry. My notebook of sentences like hers now holds 214. [What you noticed after the first fifty]
Every fact comes from the notes, and the short take fits Yale's 200 characters. The bracket is for something only the student noticed.

Yale answers from admitted students
Both students' essays come from 50 Yale Admission Success Stories, a 2020 book edited by the Yale Daily News staff and reprinted with permission on EssayMaster. Yale's questions have changed since then: the suite question and the why-Yale essay are gone, and the course short take is broader. Read them for specificity, not as templates.

Her course title, a breakup line turned into an environmental argument, makes a point and a joke in one breath. Her learning essay never leaves one moment at a microscope, watching an amoeba move.

She writes about being the self-described "Team Mom" of a 116-member debate team, and proves it with the small jobs she actually does rather than titles. The community prompt is an earlier version of this year's community option.

Why it works
What are Yale's supplemental essays for 2026–27?
For 2026–27, Yale asks Common App and Coalition applicants for six responses. They are up to three academic areas, a 200-word answer about a topic or idea that excites you, three short takes of no more than 200 characters, and one 400-word essay chosen from three prompts. QuestBridge applicants answer only the first two. The set is shorter than last year, with no "why Yale" question and one fewer short take. Every question appears above, word for word, from Yale's essay page.
River's Yale supplement writer turns what you paste into the whole set. The academic answer follows one idea you actually chased and links it to the areas you list. Short takes are cut to Yale's 200 characters, about 35 words, and each shows its exact character count. For the essay, River picks the prompt your strongest story answers, or writes the one you choose. Each answer uses a different detail, so the six pieces together show more of you than any one could.
Yale's timelines page lists November 1 for Single-Choice Early Action and the QuestBridge Match, and January 2 for Regular Decision. Early Action decisions come in mid-December and Regular Decision in late March. Yale also requires ACT or SAT scores, according to its apply page. Your drafts stay in your River workspace with the rest of your applications. Applying to Harvard as well? Use the Harvard supplement page. If an answer runs long, the essay shortener trims it, and the college essay grader scores the set.

How to write the Yale supplement yourself
Start with the academic pair, because the 200-word answer must connect to the areas you list. Pick areas that honestly fit, then choose one topic inside them that you have already pursued on your own: a question you researched, a book that sent you to three more, a project you kept tinkering with. Show the idea moving. Say what first caught you, what you did next and what you still want to know. End on the question, not a summary.
Short takes reward one sharp detail. With 200 characters you have room for one or two sentences, so skip the warm-up and answer in the first words. A course title, a named book or one honest habit beats a list of virtues. Write each take long, then cut until it fits, and count characters in the application box, since spaces and punctuation use room too. Read the three together; if two sound like the same person on the same day, rewrite one.
For the 400-word essay, choose the prompt your best unused story answers, not the one that sounds most impressive. The opposing-view option needs a real conversation and what you took from it, not a debate you won. The community option works best with a specific group and your place in it. Finally, read all six answers in order. Each should add something new, and none should repeat your activities list or your personal essay.
Questions applicants ask
Common questions
How many supplemental essays does Yale require for 2026–27?
Six responses for Common App and Coalition applicants: up to three academic areas, a 200-word answer about a topic or idea that excites you, three short takes of up to 200 characters, and one 400-word essay chosen from three prompts. QuestBridge applicants answer only the two academic questions. All of them are on Yale's essay page.
Did Yale change its supplement questions this year?
Yes. Compared with Yale's 2025–26 list, the 125-word question about what draws you to Yale is gone, and the short takes dropped from four to three. "What inspires you?" and the question about someone who influenced you were removed. A new short take asks what you hope to grow or develop during college. The three essay options did not change.
How long is a Yale short take?
No more than 200 characters, which Yale estimates at about 35 words. That is one or two sentences, so answer in the first few words and keep one concrete detail. Spaces and punctuation take room too, so check the count in the application box. River shows the exact character count under every short take it drafts.
Which Yale essay prompt should I choose?
Choose the prompt your strongest unused story already answers. Pick the opposing-view option only if you had a real conversation with someone who disagreed and can say what it changed for you. The community option needs a specific group and your role in it. The personal experience option fits a background or experience that shapes how you see things.
When are Yale's 2026–27 deadlines?
Single-Choice Early Action and the QuestBridge Match are due November 1, and Regular Decision is due January 2, according to Yale's timelines page. Early Action decisions are released in mid-December and Regular Decision in late March, with a May 1 reply date. Yale requires first-year applicants to submit ACT or SAT scores.
Is River's Yale supplement writer free to use?
You can start on the Free plan, which includes some AI usage each month and asks for no credit card. Your Yale answers are saved in your own workspace, so you can grade them, trim a short take or try another essay option later. When the monthly allowance runs out, usage pauses until it refreshes.
