What UVA asks you to write in 2026–27
UVA dropped its general short answers for 2025–26, and they have not returned. Only School of Nursing applicants answer a UVA question. Its wording, as shown in the Common App for 2026–27, is reported by College Essay Guy and GradGPT, which agree word for word. Checked October 6, 2026.

|---|---|---|
| School of Nursing applicants | Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing. | 250 words |
| Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and Kinesiology applicants | No UVA question. Your Common App personal essay, on one of its seven prompts, is your only essay. | 250 to 650 words |
UVA's admissions blog quoted the 2025–26 Nursing question with "other significant interaction"; both 2026–27 sources show "another". Dates and testing come from UVA's deadlines page.
Before and after
Your notes in. Your UVA Nursing answer out.
Applying to the School of Nursing. Grandpa had a stroke last year and spent 3 weeks in rehab. His whiteboard said FALL RISK in red. I learned to read the whole board by asking his nurses about every line. Took a CNA class this summer. Work weekends at an assisted living home in Richmond. I want to be the nurse who explains things to families.
My grandfather's whiteboard said FALL RISK in red. By the end of his three weeks in rehab, I could read every line on it, because I had asked his nurses about each one. [The question that changed how you saw his care] was the one that stuck. This summer my CNA class taught me the skills behind that board. On weekends at an assisted living home in Richmond, I get to practice them.
Every fact comes from the notes. The bracket marks the one moment only the student remembers.
Why it works
Does UVA have supplemental essays for 2026–27?
UVA has no supplemental essays for most applicants in 2026–27. Only School of Nursing applicants answer a UVA question: a 250-word response about a health care experience or another interaction that deepened their interest in nursing. Applicants to Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and Kinesiology send only the Common App personal essay. UVA's admissions blog announced the change for 2025–26, and 2026–27 guides from College Essay Guy and GradGPT confirm it continues.
River's UVA essay writer handles whichever piece you need. Nursing applicants get the short answer built on one real moment from their notes, kept within 250 words. Everyone else gets the essay UVA actually reads: River drafts your Common App personal essay from your stories, or tightens the draft you paste, at 250 to 650 words. UVA's blog says that essay does not need to mention UVA or a major, so River keeps it about you and leaves brackets for what only you know.
UVA's deadlines page lists November 1 for Early Decision and Early Action and January 5 for Regular Decision, with decisions by December 15, February 15 and April 1. Early Decision is binding. Testing is optional for students applying for fall 2027. With no UVA supplement to lean on, your personal essay is the main piece of writing UVA sees, so run it through the college essay grader, or start fresh with the college essay writer.

How to write your UVA essay yourself
For the Nursing answer, choose one moment rather than your whole interest in health care. A shift at a care home, a relative's hospital stay or a conversation with a nurse all work, as long as you can describe what you saw and what you did. Start inside the moment, then explain what it showed you about nursing as daily work: listening, explaining and the small tasks that matter. Finish with the nurse you want to become, and cut background to stay under 250 words.
If you are applying anywhere else at UVA, put that energy into your Common App essay. UVA's admissions blog advises against forcing UVA or an intended major into it, and says the essay should answer the Common App prompts and share something meaningful about you. Pick a story the rest of your application does not already tell. One specific moment or thread usually says more than a summary of your life, and the essay must land between 250 and 650 words.
Your activities list carries more of your story when there are no short answers. UVA's blog says you do not need to fill all ten spaces, and each description should simply show your own role. The activities list writer can draft them from your notes. Then read the essay and activities together and cut any detail that appears in both. Leave a few days before your deadline so you can read the essay aloud once more and fix anything that sounds stiff. Also applying to UT Austin? See UT Austin's 2026–27 prompts.
Questions applicants ask
Common questions
Does UVA have supplemental essays for 2026–27?
Only for School of Nursing applicants, who answer one 250-word question. Applicants to the College of Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and Kinesiology write no UVA supplement, so the Common App personal essay is their only essay. UVA dropped its other short answers for 2025–26, and 2026–27 guides from College Essay Guy and GradGPT confirm the change continues.
What is the UVA Nursing supplemental essay prompt?
"Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing," with a 250-word limit, as reported for 2026–27 by College Essay Guy and GradGPT. Pick one specific moment, show what you did and noticed, and end with what it taught you about the nurse you want to be.
Should I mention UVA in my Common App essay?
There is no need. A September 2026 post on UVA's admissions blog says the essay should address the Common App prompts, and that UVA has not had a why UVA essay in the writer's 20 years there. If your essay already shares something meaningful about you, the blog advises against rewriting it just to name UVA.
When are UVA's 2026–27 deadlines?
Early Decision and Early Action are due November 1, and Regular Decision is due January 5, according to UVA's deadlines page. Teachers and counselors have until November 8 or January 10. Decisions arrive by December 15 for Early Decision, February 15 for Early Action and April 1 for Regular Decision. Early Decision is binding.
Is UVA test optional for 2026–27?
Yes. Students applying for first-year admission for fall 2027 choose whether to share SAT or ACT scores, and UVA says neither choice puts them at a disadvantage. If you change your mind, UVA's deadlines page says to email by 5 PM on November 22 for early plans or January 15 for Regular Decision.
Is River's UVA essay writer free?
You can try it free. River's Free plan needs no credit card and comes with a monthly allowance of AI usage. Your UVA essay is saved in your own workspace, where you can grade it, rework a paragraph and keep each version. If you use up the month's allowance, it renews automatically, and the paid plans are on the pricing page.
