Before and after

What you paste (example)

Senior in Bakersfield. For AP Enviro I mapped every oil and gas well within two miles of my school with free GIS software: 41 wells. Showed the map to the school board in March. Want environmental engineering at Viterbi, Geodesign at Dornsife as my second choice. Weekends at my uncle's tire shop, where my dad plays Mr. Blue Sky every Saturday when we open. Favorite snack: Takis with lime. Big argument with my dad about reporting a leaking well near our neighbor's house. He said it wasn't our business. We called it in together a week later.

Two of your answers (example)

What is your favorite snack? (65 characters) Takis with lime, eaten between customers at my uncle's tire shop. Academic interests essay (opening) Forty-one. That's how many oil and gas wells sit within two miles of my high school in Bakersfield, and I only know because I mapped them for AP Environmental Science. At USC, I want to learn what to do about wells like those as an environmental engineering major at Viterbi. Geodesign at Dornsife, my second choice, would give me better maps to start from, through [a Geodesign class or lab you want].

Everything comes from the notes. The bracket marks a USC detail the student still has to choose.

Why it works

What are USC's supplemental essays for 2026–27?

USC's 2026–27 supplement asks for one required essay of about 250 words on your academic interests, two optional essays of the same length and ten short answers. USC calls the short answers Quick Takes: each allows 100 characters, and the three-word question allows 25 characters per word. One optional essay is new this year and asks about a time you disagreed with someone you know. Every question appears word for word above, as reported from the Common App by College Essay Guy and GradGPT.

River's USC supplement writer drafts the whole section from what you paste: activities, rough notes, your Common App essay or a résumé. The academic-interests essay ties your first- and second-choice majors to one thread and names only the USC programs you mention, leaving a bracket where a specific class or lab belongs. The Quick Takes come back short and concrete, each with its character count. When your notes hold a real disagreement, River drafts the optional essay too.

Deadlines shape your plan as much as the prompts do. USC's first-year page lists November 1 for Early Decision, which is binding, and for Early Action, which is not. Performing arts majors apply by December 1, and Regular Decision for most majors closes January 10. Test scores are optional. Applying to more schools? The supplemental essay writer plans every prompt on your list, and the college essay grader scores a draft before you submit.

What lands in your doc

What's in your USC supplement

  • An academic-interests essay that links both majors to one thread and stays near 250 words
  • USC programs named only from your notes, with a bracket where a class or lab belongs
  • All ten Quick Takes under 100 characters, with three describing words that are not synonyms
  • A draft of the new disagreement essay whenever your notes describe a real argument
  • Exact word and character counts on every answer, checked against USC's limits
  • A before-you-submit list with brackets to fill, the story behind each answer, and deadlines

How it works

From your notes to a finished USC section

  1. Paste your notes

Activities, majors you're weighing, a résumé or your Common App essay, pasted or dropped as files.

  2. Choose what to write

Draft the full USC section, or pick the essay, the Quick Takes or one optional question.

  3. Read your drafts

Each answer arrives in your doc with its word or character count and brackets for missing facts.

  4. Finish and submit

Fill the brackets, swap any Quick Take you'd answer differently, then grade the essay.

How to write the USC supplement on your own

Start with the required essay, because it is the only required essay and the longest piece of USC-specific writing. It asks two things: how you will pursue your interests and why USC specifically. Name what you have already done, then the question you want to keep chasing. If you list two majors, connect them with one thread, the way a student who maps oil wells might pair environmental engineering with Geodesign. Spend your words on named schools, courses and labs, not on the weather.

The Quick Takes need far less time than most students give them. In a July 2025 post, a USC admission counselor wrote that Quick Take answers do not decide admission and suggested writing the first answer that comes to mind. Still, be specific: a brand, a title or a place says more than a category. Count characters with spaces, since 100 fills quickly. Pick three describing words that are not synonyms of each other.

Treat the optional essays as two separate decisions. The disagreement question wants someone you actually know, a real issue and an honest answer to its last line: did you change your mind, find common ground or neither? The gap question applies only if you missed a fall or spring term after starting high school, so most applicants leave it blank. Finally, read every answer together, out loud if you can, and cut any story that shows up twice. Also applying to Duke? See Duke's 2026–27 prompts.

Questions applicants ask

Common questions

How many supplemental essays does USC require for 2026–27?

One. The academic-interests essay of about 250 words is required of every applicant. Two more essays of about 250 words are optional: a new disagreement question and a question about gaps in your schooling. Everyone also answers ten Quick Takes. Some majors add a portfolio, résumé or writing sample, listed on USC's first-year page.

Do the USC Quick Takes matter?

Less than students fear. A USC admission counselor wrote on the admission blog in July 2025 that Quick Take responses do not decide admission and exist so you can be yourself. Answer honestly and specifically, keep each under 100 characters, and skip the hours of polishing. Your essay, grades and activities carry the weight.

Should I answer USC's optional disagreement essay?

Answer it if you have a real story. The prompt asks about a disagreement with someone you know, so a teammate, parent or friend fits better than a stranger online. Name the issue, describe the other person fairly and answer the last question honestly. If nothing genuine comes to mind, leaving it blank is allowed.

Does USC still have separate Viterbi and Dornsife essays?

Guides that checked the 2026–27 Common App say no. GradGPT and College Transitions both report one shared writing section for every major, without the former engineering and Dornsife questions. Check your own application before you submit. Some arts, architecture and business programs still require extra materials, listed on USC's first-year page.

When are USC's 2026–27 application deadlines?

November 1 for both Early Decision and Early Action in most majors, according to USC's first-year page. Dance, drama and music majors apply Regular Decision by December 1, and most other majors by January 10. The World Bachelor in Business takes November 1 applications only. Early Decision results arrive by mid-December, Early Action in late January and Regular Decision by April 1.
