Northwestern's 2026–27 questions
Northwestern's required and optional questions
The first question is required for Common App and Coalition with Scoir applicants. Northwestern encourages you to answer at least one and no more than two of the other five. The wording is copied from Northwestern's application materials page.
| Question | Exact wording | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Required · Your background | We want to be sure we’re considering your application in the context of your personal experiences: What aspects of your background (your identity, your school setting, your community, your household, etc.) have most shaped how you see yourself engaging in Northwestern’s community, be it academically, extracurricularly, culturally, politically, socially, or otherwise? | 300 words or fewer |
| Optional · The Rock | Painting “The Rock” is a tradition at Northwestern that invites all forms of expression—students promote campus events or extracurricular groups, support social or activist causes, show their Wildcat spirit (what we call “Purple Pride”), celebrate their culture, and more. What would you paint on The Rock, and why? | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Dream class or project | Northwestern fosters a distinctively interdisciplinary culture. We believe discovery and innovation thrive at the intersection of diverse ideas, perspectives, and academic interests. Within this setting, if you could dream up an undergraduate class, research project, or creative effort (a start-up, a design prototype, a performance, etc.), what would it be? Who might be some ideal classmates or collaborators? | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Communities on campus | Community and belonging matter at Northwestern. Tell us about one or more communities, networks, or student groups you see yourself connecting with on campus. | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Location | Northwestern’s location is special: on the shore of Lake Michigan, steps from downtown Evanston, just a few miles from Chicago. What aspects of our location are most compelling to you, and why? | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Diversity of perspectives | Northwestern is a place where people with diverse backgrounds from all over the world can study, live, and talk with one another. This range of experiences and viewpoints immeasurably enriches learning. How might your individual background contribute to this diversity of perspectives in Northwestern’s classrooms and around our campus? | Fewer than 200 words |
QuestBridge applicants may treat every short answer as optional. The Common App personal essay is optional for Northwestern this cycle. Checked October 6, 2026.
Before and after
Your notes in. Northwestern's answers out.
Western Kansas, 38 seniors in my class. I started our school newspaper (me plus two freshmen), I'm yearbook co-editor and the backup shortstop. Summers I weigh trucks at the grain elevator, the tallest building in town. A lot of families here don't have reliable internet. I wrote a story about kids doing homework at night in the library parking lot on the library's Wi-Fi, and 600 people read it online. Want Medill for journalism. Rock idea: our grain elevator, painted purple. Dream class: journalism and engineering students mapping dead zones.
Background essay (opening) At a high school with 38 seniors, nobody gets to be just one thing. I'm the newspaper, half of the yearbook and the backup shortstop. When I saw kids doing homework after dark in the library parking lot, running on the library's Wi-Fi, there was no editor to pitch, so I wrote the story myself. Six hundred people read it, including [someone whose reaction surprised you]. What would you paint on The Rock? (70 words) I'd paint a grain elevator, purple from the foundation up. Back home in western Kansas, the elevator is the tallest building in town, and I've spent my summers inside it weighing trucks. On The Rock it would mean what it means at home: this is where we are. Underneath, I'd paint the name of my town, so the next kid from a class of 38 knows someone got here first.
Every fact is from the notes. The bracket asks for a detail the student never mentioned.

These answered Northwestern's former Why Northwestern question, which is not part of the 2026–27 supplement. They still help with the optional questions about communities and dream classes, which reward the same specificity.
Six Northwestern essays from admitted students
Admitted to Northwestern · posted 2021, updated 2022 · EssaysThatWorked
One is written as a campus news story about the applicant, complete with a headline and quotes. Another builds on the word "AND" to join medicine and writing, a useful model for the dream-class question.

Why it works
What are Northwestern's supplemental essays for 2026–27?
Northwestern's 2026–27 supplement has one required essay of 300 words or fewer about how your background shapes the way you will engage on campus. It also lists five optional questions, each under 200 words, and encourages you to answer one or two. Northwestern no longer requires the Common App personal essay at all, so this supplement does most of the talking about who you are. All six questions appear word for word above, copied from Northwestern's own application page.
River's Northwestern supplement writer drafts from whatever you paste: notes about your school, town or family, activities, a résumé or an essay you wrote for another college. The background essay picks the two or three parts of your story with the most to say and connects each one to what you would do at Northwestern. River then chooses the optional questions your material answers best and gives each a different story, with word counts and brackets throughout.
Plan your writing around the dates, since Early Decision arrives quickly. Northwestern's deadlines page lists November 1, 2026 for Early Decision and January 4, 2027 for Regular Decision, with decisions released in December 2026 and March 2027. Testing is optional for first-year applicants. Northwestern's writing FAQ explicitly allows reusing writing from other applications, so start from an essay you already have. The supplemental essay writer plans every school on your list, and the college essay grader scores any draft.

How to write Northwestern's supplement yourself
Read the required question closely, word by word: it asks how your background shapes the way you see yourself engaging at Northwestern. That makes it a forward-looking essay, not a life story. Choose two or three parts of your background, such as your school setting, your household or a community, and show each through one concrete detail. Then connect each part to something you would actually do on campus, in class, in a group or in student life.
For the optional questions, pick the one or two that let you show a side the background essay does not. The Rock rewards an image a reader can picture and a reason rooted in your life. The dream-class question works best when it starts from a real problem you have noticed and names the kinds of people you would want beside you. Location answers should name real places in Evanston or Chicago and what you would do there.
Watch the limits, since they are strict: 300 words or fewer for the required essay and fewer than 200 for each optional one, so 199 at most. Northwestern says you may reuse sections of your personal essay or other applications, which saves real time. Still, read every borrowed paragraph against Northwestern's exact wording. If a sentence answers a different school's question, rewrite it or cut it. Paste each final answer into the application early to confirm it fits the box. Also applying to Penn? Questions applicants ask
Common questions
Does Northwestern require the Common App essay for 2026–27?
No. Northwestern made the personal essay optional because its supplement now includes a required writing question, according to its writing supplements FAQ. You can still submit one, and Northwestern will read it. The only required writing is the background essay of 300 words or fewer, which goes to every Common App and Coalition with Scoir applicant.
How many Northwestern optional questions should I answer?
Zero to two, and Northwestern encourages at least one. Its writing FAQ says that answering more does not carry extra weight: students who answer zero, one or two optional questions get equal consideration. Answer one or two if each shows a side of you that the background essay does not, and keep each one under 200 words.
Can I reuse my personal essay for Northwestern's questions?
Yes. Northwestern says you may repurpose writing from other applications, including copying sections of your personal essay into the required answer, and that it will understand repeated language. Make sure the reused passage actually answers Northwestern's question, which asks how your background shapes the way you will engage on campus. Trim anything that answers a different school's prompt.
What should I paint on The Rock for Northwestern?
Something that shows what you care about, described clearly enough that a reader can picture it. Northwestern's prompt lists campus events, causes, school spirit and culture as fair game. Then explain why in a few sentences tied to your own life. A specific image, such as a family recipe or a landmark from home, beats a slogan.
When are Northwestern's 2026–27 deadlines?
Early Decision is due November 1, 2026, and Regular Decision January 4, 2027, per Northwestern's deadlines page. QuestBridge applications were due October 1. Early Decision results are released in December 2026 and Regular Decision results in March 2027. Financial aid forms are due December 1 for Early Decision and February 1 for Regular Decision. Testing is optional.
Is the Northwestern essay writer free?
It is free to start. River's Free plan asks for no credit card, and free usage pauses when you reach the limit. Every Northwestern answer is saved in your own workspace, so you can grade it, swap an optional question or keep older versions. For heavier use, paid plans start at $14 a month on the pricing page.
