The Letter in His Coat

The landlord was very sorry. He said so three times, and each time Elizabeth liked him less.

"One room," Mr. Darcy repeated, as though the words were a discourtesy aimed at him in particular.

"You may have it," said Elizabeth. "I have survived worse company than a chair."

Why it works

What does a good fanfiction generator give you?

An AI fanfiction generator writes new stories about characters you already love. Give this one your fandom and ship, add a trope if you like, and River writes a complete one-shot with a real ending, not an opening that trails off. Above the story sits a work header in AO3's order: rating, archive warnings, category, fandom, relationship, characters, tags and a summary. Write your ship the way AO3 does, a slash for romance and an ampersand for friendship, and the story follows suit.

Fic lives or dies on characters sounding like themselves. River keeps each one's habits of speech and the choices they would actually make, uses canon details instead of recapping them, and names any alternate universe or divergence point in the notes. Add a canon point, like after the Hunsford proposal, or your own plot notes for a closer fit. The examples here use public-domain books such as Pride and Prejudice, though any fictional canon works. Fic about public figures in their public roles works too, tagged the AO3 way, as in Formula 1 RPF.

Readers care how a fic was made, so honesty comes built in. The header suggests AO3's canonical Created Using Generative AI tag, which you can keep or delete before posting, and the rating defaults to Teen And Up Audiences unless you ask otherwise. Want the same trope-first start with characters of your own? Try the romance story generator. Planning a long multi-chapter fic? The story bible template keeps its cast and places straight.

What lands in your doc

What lands in your fic doc

  • A complete one-shot of 2,500 to 4,000 words with scene breaks and a real ending
  • An AO3-style header: rating, warnings, category, fandom, relationship, characters, tags and summary
  • Additional tags in AO3's own wording, with your trope listed first and easy to find
  • The Created Using Generative AI tag suggested at the end, for you to keep or delete
  • Characters kept in voice, with canon details used naturally instead of recapped
  • Slash and ampersand read the AO3 way, so romance and friendship ships land right
  • Teen And Up Audiences by default, or the rating you choose, with honest archive warnings

How it works

From ship to finished one-shot

  1. Name the ship

Type your fandom and ship, plus a canon point, AU or plot notes if you have them.

  2. Tap a trope

Optional: pick enemies to lovers, fake dating, hurt/comfort or another favorite, or let River choose.

  3. Read your fic

The whole one-shot lands in your doc under an AO3-style header with tags and summary.

  4. Post or continue

Edit any tag and copy the work to AO3, or keep going with a second chapter in the same voice.

Posting AI-assisted fic on AO3 the honest way

AO3's posting tutorial makes a title, a rating, archive warnings and at least one fandom required, and offers six categories: F/F, F/M, Gen, M/M, Multi and Other. River fills each field to match the story it actually wrote and uses No Archive Warnings Apply when none apply. It writes additional tags in AO3's own wording, such as There Was Only One Bed or Fake/Pretend Relationship. Edit any field you like, then copy the header across so readers browsing those tags can find your work.

AO3 itself does not ban AI-assisted work. In a 2023 admin post, the archive said nothing in its Terms of Service prohibits fanworks fully or partly generated with AI tools. Plenty of fic readers still want to know how a story was made, and some events say no outright. Yuletide's rules ask writers not to use ChatGPT or other generative tools. Check a challenge's rules before you enter, and keep the disclosure tag on anything you post.

Fanfiction sits in a legal gray area. The Organization for Transformative Works, which runs AO3, explains in its fair use FAQ that fair use favors work that is non-commercial and transformative. Its mission is protecting fans who share their work for free. Keep your fic free, credit the source, and respect any author who asks fans to stay out of their world. Real-person fic needs one more courtesy: tag it RPF so readers can filter it, and keep it clearly fiction. River's terms assign the fic to you.

Questions authors ask

Common questions

What is a fanfiction generator?

It's a tool that writes new stories about characters from the books, shows, games or films you already love. River's version takes your fandom and ship, plus a trope if you like. It writes a complete one-shot with a real ending, under an AO3-style header with rating, warnings, tags and summary. You can start free with no card on the Free plan.

Can I post AI-written fanfiction on AO3?

Yes. AO3 said in 2023 that nothing in its Terms of Service prohibits fanworks made fully or partly with AI tools. Many readers want to know, though, so River suggests AO3's Created Using Generative AI tag in your header. Some events ban AI outright, so read a challenge's rules before you submit anything.

What do / and & mean in a ship?

On AO3, a slash marks a romantic or sexual relationship, as in Elizabeth/Darcy. An ampersand marks a friendship, family bond or other platonic relationship, as in Holmes & Watson. Write your ship the same way and River sets the story's direction and the AO3 category to match, such as F/M for a romance or Gen for a friendship.

Will the characters stay in character?

That's the main thing River works at. It keeps each character's voice, habits and choices true to canon, and names any AU in the notes. Adding a canon point, like after season two, or a few plot notes gives a closer fit. For a newer or niche fandom, River tells you in chat which details to double-check rather than guessing quietly.

What rating and warnings will my fic get?

River reads the rating from what you write and uses Teen And Up Audiences if you don't say. Ask for another rating and the story keeps to the heat level you choose. Archive warnings match what the story actually contains, with No Archive Warnings Apply when none do, and you can edit any tag before you post.

Can the fanfiction generator write about real people?

Yes, about public figures in their public roles, such as drivers on the Formula 1 grid or a band on tour. River tags it the AO3 way, for example Formula 1 RPF, and keeps it clearly fiction. It won't write about private individuals, sexual content involving any real person, or anything sexual involving anyone under 18, and it never copies lyrics.

Can River turn my one-shot into a longer fic?

Yes. When the one-shot is done, River offers to keep going, and one tap writes a second chapter in the same voice, picking up where the story ended. To continue a fic you started yourself, paste your last scene into Continue My Story, which writes the next scene or a whole chapter in your voice.

Your ship deserves an ending

Name the fandom and ship, read the whole one-shot, then keep going with a second chapter if you want one.
