Ecology senior. Both statements drafted, two writers confirmed. I haven't ordered my transcripts yet. Field: Life Sciences.
Life Sciences · Ecology · due Monday, October 19, 2026, 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Do next: 1. Ask a third writer today and enter them in the GRFP module. NSF needs three names. 2. Order your official undergraduate transcript by October 8. 3. Send both drafts to two readers by October 9. Done: full draft of both statements. Flagged: the writer list and transcripts.
Dates follow NSF's 2026–27 deadlines. River ticks only what you say is done, and flags what can't wait.
Why it works
What do you need for the NSF GRFP application?
The NSF GRFP application is a set of sections in NSF's online module plus three to five reference letters that writers send separately. This checklist covers every part for the 2026–27 cycle, with the rule behind each item in plain words. Those rules include official undergraduate transcripts, the two statements with their page limits and exact headings, the allowed fonts and margins, and a writer list that locks when you submit. The rules come from NSF 26-526, quoted where the exact words matter.
Letters are due before any application, and each Major Field of Study has its own deadline, so the NSF GRFP deadlines guide lists every 2026–27 date in one place. This template dates a plan back from your deadline: when to ask writers, when to brief them, when to finish a full draft, and when to check the format. Tell River where you are, and it moves anything overdue to a date you can still make.
If you are unsure your topic or field qualifies, start with the eligibility checker, since the first field you choose sets your deadline and your reviewers. The letter request tool writes the email and brief for each writer, and writers can work from the letter of recommendation template. A week before your deadline, run your PDFs through the format checker, and get a mock review while there is time to revise. When results arrive in early April, the ratings decoder explains your band and ratings.

Questions GRFP applicants ask
Common questions
When is the NSF GRFP deadline for 2026?
It depends on your Major Field of Study. Applications close from October 19 to 23, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and reference letters are due October 16. This checklist plans back from yours, and the deadlines guide lists the date for each field.
Are GRFP letters due before the application?
Yes. Every reference letter is due Friday, October 16, 2026 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time, before every application deadline. NSF's applicant FAQ says an application is not reviewed without at least two letters. Ask four or five writers, so one late letter cannot stop you.
Do I need official transcripts for the GRFP?
For undergraduate study, yes: official undergraduate transcripts are required. Graduate transcripts can be unofficial if your school does not issue official ones to first-year, first-term students. Upload PDFs that are not encrypted or password-protected, with your date of birth, Social Security number, home address and other personal details blacked out.
Does the first field I choose matter?
Yes. The first Major Field of Study sets your deadline and the panel that reviews you. If it does not fit your research plan and degree, NSF says it will be "deemed ineligible and returned without review." Second and third fields are collected for information only.
Can I change my application after I submit?
Until your deadline, yes. NSF's FAQ explains how to withdraw and restore your application in the module to change it, and nothing can change after the deadline. The writer list is different: it cannot be changed once you submit, so check every name and email before you click submit.
Is the GRFP checklist free?
Yes. The Word download is free and needs no account. Edit with AI opens the same checklist in River, which you can start free, and a line about where you are turns it into a plan dated from today. The pricing page shows what the free plan includes.
