Your story in. Your moments in the order they mean.

Your story (example)

Three kitchens taught me that leaving home isn't the same as escaping it: my mother's in Tulsa, the restaurant line in Chicago, and my own tiny one.

Your first pass (excerpt)

What this book is about: It's about learning that leaving home isn't escaping it, as illustrated by the three kitchens I've cooked in. 1. The Line (Chicago). Why it's here: I ran as far from her kitchen as I could, and cooked her food anyway. 2. Flour on the Phone Cord (Tulsa). Why it's here: where the pattern started. 3. Open slot: a moment you realized you sounded like her. 12. My Own Stove. Why it's here: what I know now. Timeline key: Tulsa, Ch. 2 · Chicago, Ch. 1 · my own kitchen, Ch. 12

No invented dates or people. Empty slots stay questions for you to answer.

Why it works

How do you outline a memoir?

A memoir outline names what your story is about in one sentence, then orders the moments that prove it by meaning rather than by date. This template starts with Marion Roach Smith's memoir formula, from her essay on what memoir is: it's about x, as illustrated by y. You write that sentence first. Each of twelve chapter slots then holds one moment and a line on why it's there, while a timeline key keeps the real years in view.

Most outlining guides begin by sorting memories into chronological order. That suits some books, and Allison K Williams notes in her piece on two methods for structuring a memoir that chronological and thematic first drafts both work. The trouble starts when your strongest moment lands in chapter nine. Here, chapter 1 is the moment that raises your book's question, the middle chapters test it, and the last chapter holds what you know now. Moments that don't serve this book go to a parking lot.

Choose Edit with AI and the outline opens as a River doc, empty, next to a filled example. Tell River what your story is about, or paste every moment you remember. River fills a first pass: what it is about, your moments placed by meaning, and open slots left as questions. It never invents events, people or dates. The template is the plan; the AI memoir writer drafts the opening. New to memoir? Start with our guide on how to write a memoir.

What lands in your doc

What's inside the memoir outline

  • What it's about, first
One sentence in Marion Roach Smith's form, plus the question your reader carries.
  • Twelve chapter slots
Each holds a moment, why it's here, and when it really happened.
  • Hints for every stage
Short hints say what the first, middle and last chapters usually need to do.
  • Timeline key
Your moments by year, each with its chapter number, so both orders stay visible.
  • Parking lot
A short table for vivid moments that belong in an essay or another book.
  • Real-people check
Everyone you name, how they appear, whether you've asked, and whether to change the name.
  • Before-you-draft checks
Four quick checks that catch filler and a weak opening before you write chapters.

Questions authors ask

Common questions

What is a memoir outline?

A memoir outline is a plan for a true story from your life. It says in one sentence what the book is about, then lists the moments that show it, chapter by chapter, with a line on why each one is there. Unlike a diary, it orders moments by meaning, while keeping their real dates in view.

Should a memoir be in chronological order?

It doesn't have to be. Many memoirists draft in order and restructure later. Chapter 1 often works best as the moment that raises your book's question, which is rarely the earliest one. The timeline key keeps you oriented while the chapters follow meaning instead of the calendar.

Which structure works best for a memoir?

The one that serves what your story is about. In a guest post on choosing a memoir's structure, memoirist Amber Lee Starfire calls strict chronological order the easiest structure, and also describes stringing scenes along a theme. Allison K Williams suggests opening on a dramatic moment and circling back. This template supports any of them.

What should you not put in a memoir?

Leave out moments that don't serve what your book is about, however vivid; the parking lot keeps them for later. Take care with private facts about real people. Lisa Cooper Ellison explains in advice on avoiding memoir lawsuits that true details can still raise privacy claims. Authors Alliance's free guide to writing about real people goes further. This is not legal advice.

What's the difference between a memoir and an autobiography?

An autobiography usually covers a whole life. A memoir covers one part of it, such as a period, a relationship or a turning point, and what it meant. That's why this outline starts with what the book is about and keeps only the moments that serve it.

Is there a memoir outline template for Word or Google Docs?

Yes. The Download button saves this memoir outline as a Word document, no account required, and Google Docs opens Word files too. Or choose Edit with AI to open it as a River document, where River can fill a first pass from whatever you share about your story.

What comes after the outline?

Draft your chapters, then run the self-editing checklist before beta readers see them. Pitching publishers? The book proposal template is where your chapter slots become summaries. If your book teaches more than it tells, the nonfiction book outline template may fit it better.
