Before and after

A synopsis tells the story. A description sells it.

What you paste (example)

My book is a second-chance romance. Nora Quinn left Gull Harbor at eighteen after her fiancé Cal chose his family's boatyard over her. Twelve years later she comes back to sell her late grandmother's bakery, and the only bidder is Cal. They work side by side for a month. Her grandmother's letters reveal Cal tried to follow her. HEA, closed door.

Now her grandmother's bakery is hers, her Boston restaurant is sinking, and the only offer comes from Cal Bishop, the man who chose the family boatyard over her. Cal needs the building. Nora needs the money. A closed-door, second-chance small-town romance with a happily ever after worth the wait.

The letters stay a secret. That's the reader's reward.

Why it works

What makes an Amazon book description sell?

An Amazon book description generator turns your synopsis or manuscript into the sales copy on your book's page, inside the rules KDP sets. KDP allows up to 4,000 characters, counts formatting in that limit, and accepts only a short list of formatting such as bold, italics, line breaks and lists, per its description help page. River writes that copy from your own book, in the shape a shopper skims before deciding to buy.

Most descriptions fail the same way. They retell the plot from page one, name every character, and give away the turn that should make a reader buy. A description that sells opens on a hook, gives readers one person to root for, raises the stakes, and stops well before the ending. Your book's secrets are the reason to read it, so the description protects them. If an agent wants the whole story, including how it ends, use the synopsis generator instead.

River reads what you give it, works out your genre and your reader, and writes in your book's own tone with your real names and details. You get the description as readers will see it, plus its character count as KDP counts it, ready to paste. Every line stays editable in your doc, and when you want options, River can write other hooks to test. When it reads right, carry it into the KDP keyword generator to fill your seven keyword boxes.

What lands in your doc

Everything your book page needs

  • A selling description shaped as hook, setup and stakes, with your twists kept out
  • Only the formatting KDP's description editor supports, ready to copy and paste
  • A character count that includes formatting, so you know it fits under 4,000
  • Then keep going: other opening hooks to test, or your KDP keywords, one tap away
  • Written inside KDP's rules: no review quotes, links, prices, emojis or keyword lists
  • A short note on the spoilers it left out, so you know each cut was deliberate

How it works

From synopsis to sales page in four steps

  1. Paste or drop

Paste a synopsis, your back-cover notes or a chapter, or drop in the whole manuscript.

  2. River reads it

It finds your hero, the opening trouble, the stakes and the genre promise in your pages.

  3. Get your description

The description lands in your doc, formatted the way readers will see it, with its character count.

  4. Paste into KDP

Open Edit Details on your book, paste it into the Description box, and save.

What KDP accepts, and what it turns away

KDP's description box takes line breaks, paragraphs, bold, italics, underline, small headings and lists. The larger heading sizes are not supported, and every formatting mark counts toward the 4,000 characters, so a bolded word costs extra. Pasting straight from Word or Google Docs can carry hidden characters, which is behind KDP's invisible characters error, as its troubleshooting page explains. A clean paste-ready version avoids that error before you ever see it.

Some things never belong in a description, however common they are in older advice. KDP's metadata guidelines rule out review quotes and testimonials, website links, emails and phone numbers, prices and time-sensitive offers, emojis, lists of keywords, and spoilers. Breaking these rules can hold up your listing or force a rewrite after review. Review quotes have their own home in the Editorial Reviews section of Author Central. River leaves all of them out of your copy.

KDP's own writing advice is short: keep it simple and compelling, aim for about a 150-word paragraph, and write a first sentence that draws readers in. Make the genre obvious, so the right readers stay and the wrong ones move on. For eBooks, KDP also checks that the description matches the book you uploaded, so it has to describe the real story. Writing it yourself? Use the same four parts: a hook line, the setup, the stakes, and a closing line that names the genre.

Questions authors ask

Common questions

How long can an Amazon book description be?

KDP allows up to 4,000 characters, and its editor counts formatting in that total, so a bolded word costs seven extra characters. Length is not the goal, though. KDP's own advice is to aim for about a 150-word paragraph that is easy to scan, with a first sentence that draws readers in. (KDP help)

What formatting does Amazon allow in a book description?

KDP's description box has a text editor for line breaks, paragraphs, bold, italics, underline, small headings and numbered or bulleted lists. The three largest heading sizes are not supported. River uses only the supported options, so the formatting you paste in is formatting KDP keeps. (KDP help)

Why does KDP say my description contains invisible characters?

KDP says this usually means hidden or unsupported characters came along when you copied text from a document. Its fix is to retype the text or remove anything outside its supported list. River's description uses only supported formatting. If the error still appears, paste it as plain text and reapply bold and italics with the buttons above the box.

Can I put review quotes or my website in the description?

No. KDP's description rules exclude reviews, quotes and testimonials, plus website links, emails, phone numbers, prices and time-sensitive details. If you have strong review quotes, Amazon Author Central offers an Editorial Reviews section, which Amazon lists as a US-only feature. River leaves all of these out of your description.

Can an Amazon book description generator work from my whole manuscript?

Yes. Drop in your manuscript as a Word file, PDF or text file, and River reads it to find your hero, the opening trouble and the stakes. It writes the description from your book's own names and details, and it keeps twists and the ending out, because KDP asks for descriptions without spoilers. River reads your file and works in a new doc; your file stays as it is.

Will it sound like my book or like AI?

River works from your words and your genre, so the description uses your characters, your setting and your tone. It avoids stock phrases and hype. Want a different opening? Ask for other hooks to test, or have River adjust any sentence in the doc until it sounds like you.

What should I write after the description is done?

Your back cover and ad copy are a different job, and the book blurb generator writes them. To set up the whole KDP listing at once, with keywords, categories and an author bio, use Publish a Book on Amazon and drop in your manuscript.
