Core Web Vitals Triage by Template
Turn your Search Console speed report into a short, ranked fix list, one fix per page template, including slow templates the report never shows.
Paste or attach the Core Web Vitals report from Google Search Console, the report that flags pages as slow to load, slow to respond or jumpy while loading. Most guides hand you the three metrics and a list of generic tips, and the report itself hands you example addresses with a red or amber label. Neither tells a developer which file to change. This triage works in templates, because one change to a template fixes every page it builds. It also finds templates the report leaves out. Google only reports pages with enough real visitors, so a slow template spread across thousands of quiet pages can be missing from the report entirely.

What the speed report shows, and what it leaves out
Core Web Vitals are three measures of real visitors' experience. Largest Contentful Paint is how long the main content takes to appear, good at 2.5 seconds or less and poor above 4 seconds. Interaction to Next Paint is how quickly the page responds to a tap or click, good at 200 milliseconds and poor above 500. Cumulative Layout Shift is how much things jump around, good at 0.1 and poor above 0.25. Each is judged on the slowest quarter of visits, not the average.
The report is narrower than it looks. Search Console says groups without enough data are left out, and the table is a sample, not a complete list. Google's field data includes a page only when it has enough visitors to meet an undisclosed minimum. Take an illustrative tile retailer with 61,400 pages across nine templates. Real-visitor data exists for 15,612 of them, which leaves 74.6% of the site missing from its own report, including a slow brand page template.
Keep speed in proportion. Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, but also that it always seeks to show the most relevant content, even when page experience is poor. Speed helps most when you are competing with other relevant pages, and it helps every visitor regardless. After a fix ships, wait for the 28-day data window to roll past the release date before judging it, or a working fix will look like it failed.

Common questions
What are Core Web Vitals, in plain terms?
Three measures of how a page feels to real visitors. How quickly the main content shows up, how quickly the page reacts when someone taps or clicks, and how much the layout jumps while loading. Google collects them from Chrome users who agree to share data, and Search Console groups your pages as good, needs improvement or poor.
Do Core Web Vitals affect my Google rankings?
Yes, but less than content. Google says Core Web Vitals are used by its ranking systems, and also that it always tries to show the most relevant result even when page experience is poor. Why work by template instead of by page?
Because one change to a template fixes every page it builds. A product page template might generate 40,000 addresses, and the report names only some of them. A developer cannot schedule 8,000 addresses, but can schedule one fix to the product template. That is also the easiest way to show the work is worth doing.
My crawl has no template column. How do you work out the templates?
From the shape of the addresses, page titles and the layout patterns they share. River names the evidence behind each grouping and flags any it is unsure about, because a wrong grouping sends a developer to the wrong file. Confirming a few uncertain ones is quicker than labelling every page yourself. The technical SEO audit template uses the same grouping for crawl and indexing problems.
Why would a slow template be missing from the report?
Google only reports pages with enough real visitors. A template spread across many low-traffic pages may never qualify, however slow it is. River lists these templates and representative pages to test in PageSpeed Insights, which measures a single test load rather than real visitors, labelled clearly as test results.
How soon will the report improve after a fix?
Not straight away. The data covers a rolling 28-day window, so for weeks after a fix it still includes visits from before it. Recheck once the window has passed the release date. Checking the next morning shows a number that has barely moved and can get a good fix wrongly rolled back.
